If you would start (or start again) to learn computer programming, on what would you focus your attention?

Depends really what you want to do.

There are hundreds of programming languages out there, but a handful that dominate the market.

For the web, you will often see HTML (which isn't really a programming language), Javascript, PHP, Perl, Ruby, Actionscript etc.

For desktop applications, you might see: JAVA, C, C++, C# .. etc

Arguably learning C will get you a good understanding of the basics, but it can be quite difficult to learn and master. JAVA is an extremely well known and used object oriented programming language. If you are just starting off, I would recommend JAVA because you can reapply those skills to many other languages. Python might be another good choice. I believe Python, JAVA and C are common languages taught in intro courses in University. Hope this helps. If you would start (or start again) to learn computer programming, on what would you focus your attention?
I wouldn't remove anything (PASCAL/BASIC/C/C++), but I would add a little markup language (HTML/XML/XHTML) with some XML Schema, and throw in Java and more SQL.
